Back before punk was in commercials, when bands like the Bad Brains were blowing minds in NYC, Texas had it's own bands with a distinct Southern flavor. Both the Dicks and the Big Boys had flamboyantly gay fat frontmen in a state that was still burning crosses. Here's the Big Boys...one of my all time fave bands.... Biscuits the singer died last year...RIP

Bad Samaritans
Back when I was a nipper my favorite band were the Cowboy Killers from South Wales... they sounded like a cross between the Dead Kennedys and Flag Of Democracy. The band's singer Beddis was the craziest frontman I have ever seen (to this day). AS was the custom back then, I wrote to every band I liked and Beddis became a close friend (when I was 14 he even called my mum so she would let me go and stay with him to see DOA). I continued visiting every school holiday until I left home. I love every Cowboy Killers record (extended post on this coming soon) and was sad when they called it a day. Since then Beddis has spent some time inside but is now back on the straight and narrow with his new band the Bad Samaritans featuring folks from the Abs and Dub War. Wish I could have been there for this their first gig...looks awesome....

Extreme Noise Terror
I missed the 'glory days' of uk punk...just by a year or two - I started going to gigs in '86 and everyone from the good old days had gone metal. My years were the UK hardcore of 87-90 which for the most part was a bunch of plodding crusty shite like Bolthrower and Deviated Instinct. One band who I LOVED were Extreme Noise Terror.... their early records were so fucking over the top. I wish I still had the demos the singer sent me with hand drawn logo.... Here is a great section from the show 'Snub TV' with ENT & Napalm Death. This shit blew my mind at the time.... classic Bill Steer interview at the end...

David Fullarton
Don't do much art posting...but I'm fully digging this cat's work. He is an SF local, but a Scottish transplant and his work appeals to me.....

Pianosaurus!
i guess the thought of a band recording solely on toy instruments sounds way to twee to be cool these days but i still think this is one of my favorite albums ever..(well for today anyway!) shame there's no actual footage of the band but the tune rules anyhow! ..they only released one long player back in '87..

Never Again
The last post made me wanna listen to Discharge.... 1983... look how many fuckin people are there!
Stone Roses
I also just got a bunch of Stone Roses 7"s... I couldn't give a fuck bout these back in the day as I thought they were a bunch of drugged up scallys and I just wanted to listen to Discharge. Times have changed and while I still like to listen to Discharge I'm just has happy rocking the Roses....
Romantics
I just picked up a 7" by these guys... totally fruity Detroit power-pop...and the video is even fruitier than the 7"...but I'm digging it...

Skate Witches.
A gang of female skaters terrorize their town. Shot on Super 8. Before you younger Bricks and Mortar fans make fun, remember that one of these three rat-wrangling women could be your mom.

Tour Of California
The Tour Of California rolls through SF today...Lance Armstrong and Co. are doing 750 miles in 9 days.... Our friends at MASH are riding the same course a couple of hours ahead of the oficial race. Looks hellish with all this rain... Mike and Co. will be blogging from the road and then we are going to put a little film of the trip together... should be sick...

Goner
Every year I wish I could be in Memphis for the Goner Fest....and I still haven't made it. Goner Fest is the beating heart of the lo-fi garage punk scene that has mutated into beasts like Jay Reatard, Eddie Current Suppression Ring, Reigning Sound, Digital Leather, Human Eye and all manner of fucked up 'bands you'll only hear of when their records are sold out'. It's the fuckin who's who..... here's a trailer for the DVD which I a gonna have to get my hands on......
Greg Cartwright - Goner Fest 4.
AV Murder - Goner Fest V (note....band from ex-Tyrades folks... for those who dug the Tyrades post..)
Digital Leather - Goner Fest 2

Suburban Lawns -- Janitor
One of my favorite bands from near where I grew up in the LA suburbs. Great song, great video.
1981 Showtime short doc on LA punk with Suburban Lawns, Angry Samoans, Dickies, etc...
This is a laugh. Love the Suburban Lawns footage. Dickies interview in Part II is priceless.
Happy Valentine's Day
hope you got lots of nice chocolates and flowers etc. In Scotland when I was a kid it was the done thing to buy horrendous garish big valentine's cards for the girl (or girls) you fancied and deface every inch of the card and envelope with 'humorous' valentine's poems. There was a strict tradition that you could not diverge from for fear of putting the girl off you for ever. The card had to be anonymous but you could hint at your identity if you wanted. Some examples of the inventive rhymes employed:
Postie Postie
Do not tarry
Take this to
The one I'll marry
Postie Postie
Do your duty
Take this to
My blue eyed beauty
I wish I were a Rangers scarf
Hanging from your neck
And every time they scored a goal
What a hug I'd get
I love you, I love you, I love you almighty
I wish my pyjamas were next to your nightie
don't be mistaken, don't be misled
I mean on the washing line, not in the bed.
I know, I know... Valentine's Day is just an excuse for Hallmark and Nestle to sell more cards and chocolates... it's a capitalist holiday just like mother's day and father's day... who cares, it's a bit of fun...
Enough of that shit, here's some love songs for ya...
Cock Sparrer - We Love You
The Damned - Love Song
And one non-love song (for those anti-valentine's grinches)
PiL - This Is Not A Love Song
Postie Postie
Do not tarry
Take this to

Riot Riot
So here's a wee doc about the Brixton Riots... I used to live just down the road from here...and in '96 they did it again... we were at home watching TV while the city burned...
Summer Of 81
Summer of 81 was hot as hell.... there were riots all over the UK... I was tucked away in Cornwall and the tender age of 10 so remember little... but I do love the Viloators 'Summer Of 81' 7"
London Cycle Couriers
I drove a van round London for a couple of years and my my Jono and B&M contributor spent many years on a bike with Metro (in fact I think he still does a turn). Here's a rad little film for him....

New York Crew
So I just got back from 2 days in New York... love that town, had a blast catching up with pals. Oliver showed me around some legendary spots from the old days of hardcore when he was going to hardcore matinees every weekend. I wanted to put up Judge's New York Crew but the vid I found was ropey.... so here's Judge's version of 'Warriors' by Blitz, cut to the film of the same name... sick...
Youth Of Today at the Anthrax in 88... not strictly NYC but I was thing of the BiG Apple when I think of them....
And here is an MTV of old NYC band Kraut...who wouldda thought???

Tyrades
One of my fave bandS of the last decade were the TYRADES... all their records are grrrrreat, but live? Holy shit... total madness - just a total spazzfest........
Budgie
So I went to sell records yesterday at the Gilman st record swap... I sold some shit...but bought more - picked up a bunch of good shit. Best score was 4 Budgie LPs for $10! Unfortunatly not their 1st 3 LPs.... but still some rad mid 70's rock... I love the fact that they have a budgie on every LP cover.... a budgie? awesome.....

More June Brides...
Got a message from Gavin Watson who posted up a sick old pic of the June Brides on his site... so fuck it....gonna posted here too.....
Lux Interior RIP
I'm not a huge Cramps fan...just couldn't dig it, but there's no denying the impact they had/have as a band....still on the edge even after near 3 decades. Dunno what happened, lets hope it by some ingestion of narcotics rather than falling on the zimmer frame.... RIP.

June Brides..
seeings that brooksey brought it up.. ( being a massive C86 fan) heres a nice one from The June Brides.. in many ways they paved the way for the more popular indie-pop bands. They didn't make it on the C86 tape for whatever reason but were definitely up there and they were amazing live too (was a bit too young to actually see em at the time).. apparently they reformed for a gig this month.. missed em again!
Shop Assistants
.... Now that the sound of C86 is making a comeback its time to dig back into those records from the 80's... one of the best in the world of femme fronted twee pop....
DJ Scotch Egg.... innit?
i dug out my old Gameboy colour for me little boy to have a razz on the other day.. before the snow came and we all went outside to play!
The ol' Gameboy reminded me of this local nutter..(well he's originally from Tokyo but he lives in Brighton now) who i went to see supporting The Bug and Wolf Eyes a few years back and he flipped my wig! Makes all his noises on Gameboys rigged up together which he does live.. it drives the Mrs crackers...but i like it!
