Who wouldda thought the best Rap album of 09 would be the new Raekwon LP. I love the Wu man... and the firstwave of solo shit in the mid 90's was sick: GZA, Ghostface, Raekwon are stand up fave's. Of recent years it seems that only RZA and Ghostface have managed to keep the flame burnin'.... until now. Cuban Linx II is as good as anything these guys have done - almost like the OG Wu with guests from RZA, Ghostface, Method Man, Inspecka Deck... it has the same vibe as Linx one, but updated with Dre on the buttons. Can't listen to this enough.....

Paradise Of Garage comps
I just picked up a killer comp of Texas psych from the 60's. There's a bunch of volumes but as far as I can tell only one on record. All killer no filler. The Scotty McKay Quintet's version of 'Train Kept a Rolli' is boss, especially seeing as the band befriend Jimmy Page from The Yardbirds, sent him the track and he overdubbed a solo. Most of the stuff is straight up banging garage - in the vein of early Elevators.... sure there's psych in there, but this ain't no hippy shit. I found digital files at the fantastic "Paradise Of Garage Comps" blog. Click the link above. Here's some rad Elevators footage to get you in the mood.

Lucifer Over London
I'm not too hip with the neo-folk/industrial weirdo shit like Nurse With Wound, Current 93, Death In June et al, considering they have all done about a billion releases....some of which sound like people chucking shit down stairs. There's songs from them all that strike a chord once in a while. Epic Black Sabath rip here from Current 93.
Slayed?
Shanksy's post is hard to follow... what better way than with Slade (again). No fucker knows who this band are in the States, but in the UK they are an institution like Eastenders and Top Of The Pops. I know all the hip kids will be talking about when they were called Ambrose Slade and were skinheads and shit. Fuck that. I'm all about the 70's era when they were EVERYWHERE. Total party music. Back home, if you put Slade on, the party has started. Here's a track from the epic 'Slayed?" LP when they were in full galm effect. also a link to the MP3's.

War Photographer
Don't mean to be a downer, but just saw this documentary called "War Photographer," about a guy named James Nachtwey. Really heavy shit, but pretty amazing. Raises all kinds of questions, not only about him and his work, but about the rest of us who view it and how we view it. I also checked out a book of his stuff called "Inferno." This clip isn't an official trailer, but it'll give you a feel for the film.
The one thing missing from the clip that was particularly interesting, was they attached a microcamera to the body of his camera (the still image above). So as he is taking photos--and these photos are INTENSE--you see exactly what he's looking at, how he's framing it up, how close he is to this immense sadness and destruction and pain. Highly recommended.
Da Mystery Of Chestboxing
Fuckin Wu Tang and Lego?. What's not to like. (Thanks to our pals at One Sound for this).
Ten Years After
I've been on a late 60's early 70's rock kick of late. I had no idea that Ten Years After played Woodstock?. When I was really little the only records I'd seen were my Mum's paltry Dylan collection...until I saw some of my Uncle Steve's vinyl. He was younger than my Mum and in the mid 70's was all about flares, long hair and fuckin rock n roll. I saw records by The Groundhogs, Ten Years After etc. It was'nt til decades later that I got into that shit. Some is too much introspective wankery, but when it hits a groove I'm feelin it. Here's Ten Years After at Woodstock. Epic. Also a link to a crazy Ten Years After fan page.

In Extremis
In Extremis indeed - I just picked up the first Martyrdod and I'd forgotten how fucking extreme the band are..... this track is from their second LP which is no less harsh. Falling somewhere between Scandinavain crust and black metal...this shit is not for the faint of heart!!!
Lotek Mixtape 1
I'm sure I posted this before, but Allan came over last night with Kyle who is in this vid - and I forgot how fucking ripping the SF crew are... raddd!!!

Love
No secret that we Love Love. Arthur Lee is a fuggin genius. Snagged this from Scott's Facebook posting - some sickass 70's goodness.... RIP Arthur.
Beauregarde
So get this.... Portland wrestler in the late 60's who fancies himself as a singer gets a band together (including a 17 year old Greg Sage later of the Wipers) and lays down a bunch of soulful psych vibes. I kept seeing the LP and I just had to own it. No let down....shit is epic. The dude used to enter the ring on a 3 heeled motorbike to the sound of his own jams. Feeling it.

The sounds they reign
Following yesterday's post, wanted to put this one up to. Blowing my head. And at the bottom is the original, from 60s psych band Glass Sun. Greg Cartwright can really pick the covers (in this case, with a slight name change).

"Can there be any doubt...
...that from here on out, this debris is all that's left of me."
Sick. Been out a few months now but I finally got my hands on the latest Reigning Sound. Been listening to them religiously lately and this track is probably my new fave. Great hooks, insanely good lyrics, and that organ is killing me.

Society Of Invisibles
Not new, but new to me.... this hip hop crew harness the deep dark Wu Tang beats with lyrics about dismemberment and fucking shit up. My kind of crew.
Brain Donor
Our man Michael dropped the birthday hammer with a gift of the most recent Brain Donor disc "Drain Boner"....fucked up psych heavyness influnenced in no small part by Cope's Japrock fascination. This track is a little less dark.... but no less ripping. Thanks for the gift dude....

Suga Bear - Graveyard Shift
From 1998 coming out of the Protrero Projects in SF this LP has some sweet lazy beats but super harsh gangbanging lyrics. One of the few records to come out of these fierce projects in the city this album caused a gangwar due to the lyrical content. I don't know if this even came out on vinyl? If so...hook a brother up!!

Euro Stomp
Ever since I got a batch of 60's garage tapes a decade or so ago, I've had a bit of a thing for Euro garage. Lots of folks are familiar with Q65 or Golden Earings.... but today I just got a great comp called 'Searching In The Wilderness" which has a bunch of GREAT obscuro garage from the likes of the Red Squares, Namelosers, Outlaws, Snobs and then stuff by the aforementioned Q65 and Golden Earings. It even has a track by a band called Sean Buckley And The Breadcrumbs featuring a very young Jimmy Page on geetar... rock on!!!

Our pal Eric was part of the tiki lounge crew Ape. Pretty rad that a dude makes a tiki live while they play...
Pierced Arrows
Still hard to believe that Fred Cole and Co. are on Vice records..... the band rule. Our love for all things Fred Cole is no secret, and this video shows the band are ripping. Can't wait for the new LP.

Litmus
Litmus are a space rock band from dear old blighty. Where lots of these types of bands get too 'out there', this band keep it driving.... just like your favorite Hawkwind numbers. They just put out a new record too...

FUCK CITY
On my birthday this girl who has been text messaging me for over a year and a half (one time she sent me a picture of herself in her underwear which I sent to all my friends but when I tried to get pictures of her yammers or vagina she wouldn't do it and clammed up, so to speak) and who I have met once in my life (a year and a half ago) (she has been sending me "sexy" text messages too, "sextmessages") calls me twice. Well, it's not really my birthday, it's the night before my birthday but at midnight, it's my birthday, you know? And it IS midnight and I AM throwing up outside Colins work, over on 16th. Anyways this girl I was talking about before calls me and leaves me a message, which is her singing "happy birthday" in that Marilyn Monroe-to-JFK-style, and I laugh and puke some more. Eventually I decide I am gonna take the bus home because I'm too loaded and besides there's no girls there anyways. So I ask Kaheem ( a black guy) if he knows when the next bus is because he has a next-generation cell phone, but he forgot to pay the bill (typical) and so I walk down to the bus stop but the next bus thing on the bus stop is broken, which isn't a problem really (people've been waiting for busses without knowing when they're coming for a long time I figure) but fuckin hell it's goddam raining and freezing and I'm by myself and I can't stop farting which is real depressing when it's your birthday and you're just standing there farting in the rain. So this girl text messages me saying she lives on 15th street and since I'm on 16th street and it's cold and raining and my birthday why the fuck not? She calls me three times after I confirm I'm gonna come over to her house. Three times in something like five minutes. I get there and christ she's got the body of a skinny lesbian, you know, like real muted tits and skinny but too skinny, you know? All over. Also a haircut outta my goddam nightmares. She's in her underwear so that's promising. She talks in a fucking fauxScottish accent for the next fifteen minutes, in which I sleep with her. I've really only known her for an hour (we hung out for forty five the first time) so this is pretty sick. I bang her for like four minutes and then realize I'm not wearing a condom (they call them "prangers" in Australia) and then something gross happens (I am not having a kid). I kept my pants on cuz I wanted to leave right after (THIS IS A GOOD MOVE AND USUALLY WORKS) but I sit for a sec, I ain't a JERK I'm just busy. So I make some smalltalk and I prepare to split, I tell her "I Gotta split, I wanna wake up in my own bed on my birthday" which is partially true but also I get grossed out as fuck when I look at the girls I bang after I bang them, unless they're cute. Anyways she starts like (she's still naked by the way) curling up into sort of a fetal position but a bit more relaxed, and she's crying and convulsing. So I, being sensitive and empathetic and all that, ask her what's wrong. I'm gonna put a paragraph break here because this is running on too long.
She asks me "Have you ever been raped before" which makes me freak out DID I JUST RAPE THIS GIRL? but I played it cool and said "DID I JUST RAPE YOU?" and she said no but she'd been raped before and usually didn't have sex. And then proceeded to give me some nut-talk for the next hour and it freaks me out because as I said before and as is obvious if you've ever met me I'm an extremely sensitive man. Anyways she starts losing it I say "OK OK I'LL STAY HERE!" and then she puts on that movie Happiness (this seriously happens in like the fuckin blink of an eye, this part) (she's still naked, I'm dressed with shoes and jacket on) while I recline on the bed. She puts it on that scene where the girl tells the fat guy who's also in Little Nicky that she wants to break up with him and I say "WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE INSANE" because she's I think trying to make some statement about me trying to leave after knowing her for an hour and cumming on her thigh but fuck that. Also Happiness was OK the first time I saw it but I hate people who try to be "dark" and "weird" by liking it. Also, I just realized this now, but a kid gets raped in that movie, why would you put it on if you're freaking about a surprise sex attack of your own? Also her room is just a bed surrounded by liquor bottles (kinda expensive brands, too, jack daniels and shit like that) and diet coke bottles filled with water. And pill bottles but nothing cool. Anyways then she starts crying some more while I'm gathering up stuff to leave (taking cigarettes from her purse) and she puts on this video of this little girl singing. She then gives me a speech, like from a movie, a real dramatic one, about how PEOPLE LIKE THIS INSPIRE ME. THEY GIVE IT THEIR ALL. etc etc etc and how creeps and scum like me are crap and blah blah blah. I left and it was like breaking out of prison, getting out of their, blood really rushing, lungs breathing in air mixed with freedom, tastes like gold. Only now it's 4 A.M. and it's raining and I'm far as shit from my house (I lived with a fat crackhead and two parents {not mine}). She starts text messaging me "I'M GLAD I HAVE ENOUGH PILLS TO DO IT" which I figured meant she was gonna off herself. Then she sent me crazy ones like "You've never been raped before" and "You're scum" for the next week and now I just avoid 15th street.

Fucking love this band. When I was in Blighty in the Nerves we hung out and played with these all the time. Good band. Good people. Simon moved stateside, Keef moved to the City of punk (Notts) and gawd knows about the others.... still sounds good. Epic vid....

Ok. so get this. Outside of Dallas that does this Halloween show that's supposed to turn folks to the Lord. They reinact Columbine, Rape (at a rave), someone dying of AIDS, a girl having an abortion... it is fuuuucked up. Whats most fucked up is the faux Oscars where kids get awards for 'best shooter', best 'rape victim'..... Fucking Christians. If anyone else did that they'd be lynched.... here's a palate cleanser....
NN
Just got the second 7" from NN from SF. They are a Latino punk band fronted by Martin from Limp Wrist/Needles/Los Crudos. The new 7" is aslice of fantastic melodic punk with Spanish lyrics. Can't understand a lick, but sounds good to these ears......

BLOW ME
fuck me dogs I'm entering the "blogosphere", which I was sort of surprised to see mainly consists of two over-the-hill Britons posting you-tube videos of cops tazering a colo"u"red man with absolutely no provocation. Anyways every cocksucker this side of the Rhine cums purple whenever anyone anywhere mentions the compound word krautrock. However Your Man Belden doesn't fall for this kinda no-doubt Hebrew-backed trickery. Not now no how. Anyways here's a you-tube video of a great band doing a great song. This is what I wish Krautrock really sounded like instead of music seemingly made to drive me out of Aquarius records (the worst store in the world).
Yo there was a fuckin video here but I can't figure out how to post it. I guess if you want to look at it click on this but if not eh .

Phantom Surfers
Mike Lucas is a bit of a local legend. Super eccentric, the dude has been around the scene for years, still reviews for MRR and still plays. I'm not the biggest fan of surf music as a whole, but I can dig the Surfers and their schtick. (Stole this post off Lightenin's Facebook)
Grand Funk Railroad
I don't give a fuck that these dudes became bloated staium rock. The early jams still kick.... 1969? too right.

Dans Le Sac Vs Scroobious Pip
Right. I'm hearing you on the name. Thats why I avoided this too. But this is ruling. Great rhymes. Nice beats. I need more.
Talk Is Poison
Talk Is Poison were a shortlived Bay Area hardcore band from the late 90's. They did a handful of eps and imploded (into bands like Needles, Look Back and Laugh, California Love etc). The records are punishing. Look how you Brian Sterne (bass) looks!!! epic.
Cock Sparrer
Played SF this weekend and slayed it. I'm not too into old bands peddling their wares years after the fact, but the Sparrer haven't really changed tack... absolute showmen... killer.

Underground Resistance
The scape of electronic music was changed for ever when the force Underground Resistance came about in the mid 80's. Coming out of the desolate landscape of Detroit, these techno terrorists took the electronic music scene by storm. Listening to Acid Rain still sends chills down my spine...
Railway imagery of Blyth Power
Trainspotters are mocked here in the U.K....i should know, never having lived down my early years interest in the railways. I tried and succesfully hid my childhood passion.....never mentioned the peaks, whistlers, double headers and deltics of my pre teen summers...here on the other hand are a band who's singer was in The Mob and Zounds, who's punk status and history is unquestionable singing about 50's... their record covers; "Land, sea and sky" has a 56 pulling a load of coal, 25's, 47's and 40's appear on others...i don't care who knows the knowledge i retained about diesel engines...."Land, sea and sky" is a great album too.

A Place To Bury Strangers
I'm sure the smug music press is already over these guys, but I'm feeling their feedback drenched Marychain vibes... seems that pouty shoe-gaze is all the rage these days in the underground with bands like the Dum Dum Girls and labels like HoZac as well as getting play with the bigger labels. Some of this shit is boring self indulgent shit, but when they hit the hooks... I'm feeling it.
The Professionals
I saw Lightin' post this on his Facebook, so thought I'd throw it up here. Such a great song! Not too many folk know of Steve Jones & Paul Cook's post Pistols band. I like 'em way more than Lydon's artsy drivel with PIL. Good old singalong punk rock!
Supercharged
I'm pretty sure we posted about this before, but the Tim Braunch documentary 'Supercharged' is now out. We've yet to see it, but the trailer looks rad. Our friend Pete Koff put it together using his friends bands music which is sweet. Keep yer ears peeled for some Young Offenders tracks in there...

Eye Hate God
The sun is shining in SF and life is good. What better time to dip into the madness that is Eye Hate God. Their stories of booze, jails and drugs are legendary. They played Timmy's Chaos In Tejas this year, but we were up the road worshiping at the temple that is the Pierced Arrows. I've been feeling the dirty dark sludge of these cats recently. Our very own Sir Shanksalot was witness to them on a boat going up the hudson the other week. I'll let him tell you about that!!..

Pink Fairies
The Pink Fairies were an English rock band active in the London underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s. They promoted free music, drug taking and anarchy and often performed impromptu gigs and other agitprop stunts, such as free outside the gates at the Isle of Wight pop festival, the Windsor Free Festivals as well as appearing at the first Glastonbury outing and Phun City. All their records are worth tracking down, but they are probably most famous for Larry Wallis getting together with Lemmy from Hawkwind for the initial lineup of Motorhead (or Bastard as they were know for a while). The first Mororhead record (posthumously released as 'On Parole') is by far my favorite, sounding somewhere between the Fairies and the more straight ahead Hawkwind stuff.... City Kids was originally a Pink Fairies song...

Video Dead
When I left school I went to college to do my A levels and spent more time dossing about with my mates than doing work. Me and Chris Morrison used to skip every Tuesday and watch old zombie flicks. I'v never been into horror films before or since, but this period was a special time for me. One of our faves was Video Dead... total skint. Epic.
GISM
I have been listening to a lot f blown out noise and Japanese hardcore from the early 80's. GISM are the pinnacle of crazy thrash. I have been battering their 'Detestation' LP this weekend....so what better way to start a Monday then 'Endless Blockade for the Pussyfooter'...ahhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrghhhhh

Watain
In keeping with the meatl theme of toady - here's some pics of Watain. I read somewhere that they are Nazis....but I'm not totally sure.. some of this Black Metal stuff is borderline..... Don't worry though... this song is about the antichrist..
Into The Crypts Of Rays
When I was a nipper I was really into Celtic Frost... they had this super weird take on thrash metal... all atmosphere and shit... along with weirdo songs like 'Mexican Radio' and 'I Won't Dance'. I was rocking 'Into Pandemonium' this morning ad it still stands the test of time....

Oldie but a goldie - Daytona 500 is the best track on the 'Iron Man' Lp. Ghostface has been the most most consistant of the post Wu projects. This is off his 1st LP... waaay back in the day

Sonic Chicken 4
along with the Clams, Sonic Chicken 4 from France played and totally blew my mind...... so cool and weird. Like the Fallouts meeting fucking Hawkwind and 60's pop....... the drummer is mental and the guitarplayer shared his last drop of bacardi with me. Oh and thee Vicars got paid $300 and Sonic Chicken 4 got $15.... weak
Shannon And The Clams
So, we went to see thee Vicars. They totally had the Seeds/ sonics sound down and they were like 18. They are the 'next big thing' back home. They were fine, but didn't we see this 15/20 years ago done waaaaaay better by the Mighty Caesers, Milkshakes, Cynics and Lyres. They even had a manager. Nice. They were totally blown away by Shannon And The Clams who have this crazy sultry doowop/soul thing going on. Not sure I'm feeling their Oakland hobo hipster following, but they ripped...
D-Clone
Japanese noise merchants D-Clone played here last week. I missed them. They ripped by all accounts..

De Kift
This Dutch band has been going for almost 20 years... run in the same circles as The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans etc.
Mississippi Records has teamed up with Dutch label Red Wig (who recently released the searing Rondos reissue 2XLP) to re-release the band's first album and 7"EP from 1989 here in the US. It's brilliant stuff. The newer stuff is a lot less punk (check out this video...) but that early stuff is noisy, abrasive, and direct. Worth seeking out.

Steven Reich
I was listening to an interview with a pulitzer prize winning music critic Tim Page who has aspergers syndrome (a form of autism). He was talking about how music spoke to him in a way the confusion of people and the world didn't. I sometimes feel like that. He talked about his first written criticism of a piece by Steven Reich where he talked about the enjoyment of the music was not the start and the end....but the journey. I like that. It's pissing with rain in SF and somehow the fluidity of Reich seems perfect for the dull days.....

Billy Bragg at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009
Billy Bragg played this year's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park. This was my first time seeing him, and he put on one hell of a show. I found myself going back to some of his recorded material that had put me off. If you're like me, and prefer his recorded stuff without a band accompaniment, then you will find a whole new appreciation for songs like "I Keep Faith" and "Greetings to the New Brunette" when its just Billy and a guitar.
Here are some decent quality live tracks from that performance:
No Power Without Accountability
Sing Their Souls Back Home
Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards
OM
After haning out Pauladelphia last weekend I've had my head stuck into some stoner vibes.... OM are great; medatative and grooving... the new record killlllllllls.

Bare Wires
One of my purchases this weekend was an LP by the Bare Wires.... bought solely on the fact that one of the members of Snakeflower 2 is in them. Not disappointed one bit, super catchy powerpop, kinda like the Scientists. These cats are local too... Loving it.

Citizens Arrest
There's a new double LP discography of this New York band's discography just come out. I dug out the LP and 7" and shit still kills. This live video is a little tame, but it's still good to see. Falling somewhere between Void, Ripcord and Siege this band were amazing. No-one has that deep growl to scream thing down like Daryl did!!!

Urban Struggle Battle Of The Cuckoos Nest
I have never seen this doc before.... interviews are great and the early super raw footage of Black Flag is some of the best I've seen...
Interbike
For those (like me) who couldn't make Vegas... here's a little run through. My bike is at 2.40. No really... that's my actual bike... it went instead of me. Heads up to Mike, Gabe and the crew for throwing down Mash style as always!!

Off With Their Heads
In response the the 'Fun Punk' post. Here's Off With Their Heads - who have fun and are punk. They are playinf SF soon with Cock Sparrer....
Witch - Introduction
Any reader(s) of the blog will know my fascination with Zambian music from the late 60's/early 70's. I only just discovered this shit last year even though I was born there and members of my family lived there for years. In fact, The Peace and Witch albums recorded in the next goddamn town!! wtf? Anyway, I paid top dollar for the reish of the Witch - Lazy Bones LP... and what a bonzer. Now those fuckers at Shadocks have delivered the first Witch album 'Introduction'. Hollllllllllly Shit. This is some primal fuzz... and the hooks? are you kidding me. I don't even want to tell you how many duckets I dropped on this repro. Trust me, it was worth every penny... and for all you collector fucks who think they'll track down the orig? it ain't gonna happen. Trust me. Don't have mp3's to share... but follow this link for a taste. 500 of them on thick-ass vinyl.
