Any reader(s) of the blog will know my fascination with Zambian music from the late 60's/early 70's. I only just discovered this shit last year even though I was born there and members of my family lived there for years. In fact, The Peace and Witch albums recorded in the next goddamn town!! wtf? Anyway, I paid top dollar for the reish of the Witch - Lazy Bones LP... and what a bonzer. Now those fuckers at Shadocks have delivered the first Witch album 'Introduction'. Hollllllllllly Shit. This is some primal fuzz... and the hooks? are you kidding me. I don't even want to tell you how many duckets I dropped on this repro. Trust me, it was worth every penny... and for all you collector fucks who think they'll track down the orig? it ain't gonna happen. Trust me. It was a rough week. That shit sucked. Fuck. But, you know how with all bad must come good...or some shit. I found myself digging deep into the collection for solace....pulling out gems that would make everything feel alright. So I went for the Infest, Cro Mags, No Comment, NWA records... filtered through some Roky Erickson, Hawkwind and African Psych to calm the frying nerves. In doing so I remembered the ultimate nihilist garage band, the Reatards. Now that that the punk elite have scoffed at Jay Reatard's 'selling out', he's the bloated fat rockstar creep we all loathe. Wait a minute. Didn't Jay himself always profess to the rock n roll ideal?. Outta My Mind? the dude was fucked at 17. What's more punk than recording hundreds of tracks of genius spite and bile in your bedroom then some record twerp is gonna get you high and laid and fucking paid to release them. Hats off Jay...punk as fuck. But the truth remains.... the Reatards were waaaaaay more punk than he is now......dude was 17 and clearing rooms full of seasoned punks with chair legs and bloody broken bottles. The real deal.....

Screaming Dead

I stumbled across this band on the label No Future that most folks would know for releasing Blitz, Partisans, Red Alert and a number of other top not notch skin and punk bands. Screaming Dead were almost a total goth band (albeit with a punk edge). It took me years to track down their 12" on Future.... and it was worth the wait. I'm certain this shit ain't too rare as the punks probably avoided it ...... and they were too punk for the goths. Sounds good to me tho',.......

Rorschach.

One of the most forward thinking hardcore bands of the early 90's was Rorschach. I was lucky enough to see them dismantle a bar in Nottingham on their UK tour. They are doing a couple of reunion shows... I hope they come to the West Coast.

I liked Arab Strap, but I LOVE Malcolm Middleton's solo stuff waaaay more. He just released a new LP which is great... in fact all his stuff is great. Smart, cynical and funny.... I vaguely saw him at Green Man, but there were too many folkies in the way to see properly...
