Pink Fairies

The Pink Fairies were an English rock band active in the London underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s. They promoted free music, drug taking and anarchy and often performed impromptu gigs and other agitprop stunts, such as free outside the gates at the Isle of Wight pop festival, the Windsor Free Festivals as well as appearing at the first Glastonbury outing and Phun City. All their records are worth tracking down, but they are probably most famous for Larry Wallis getting together with Lemmy from Hawkwind for the initial lineup of Motorhead (or Bastard as they were know for a while). The first Mororhead record (posthumously released as 'On Parole') is by far my favorite, sounding somewhere between the Fairies and the more straight ahead Hawkwind stuff.... City Kids was originally a Pink Fairies song...

Video Dead

When I left school I went to college to do my A levels and spent more time dossing about with my mates than doing work. Me and Chris Morrison used to skip every Tuesday and watch old zombie flicks. I'v never been into horror films before or since, but this period was a special time for me. One of our faves was Video Dead... total skint. Epic.

GISM

I have been listening to a lot f blown out noise and Japanese hardcore from the early 80's. GISM are the pinnacle of crazy thrash. I have been battering their 'Detestation' LP this weekend....so what better way to start a Monday then 'Endless Blockade for the Pussyfooter'...ahhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrghhhhh

Immortal

Our friend Ola linked us up with this video of Immortal.

here's the OG. I love the way the dude is rocking a fucking wizard's hat. Genius.

The Spits

They played SF last night. Missed them again. Bummer. I heard they rules as usual. New LP is ripping too...

Hunx And His Punx.

SMALL FACES - Documentary

Can't remember if this has been posted before. Well, it doesn't hurt to post again if it has.

Watain

In keeping with the meatl theme of toady - here's some pics of Watain. I read somewhere that they are Nazis....but I'm not totally sure.. some of this Black Metal stuff is borderline..... Don't worry though... this song is about the antichrist..

Into The Crypts Of Rays

When I was a nipper I was really into Celtic Frost... they had this super weird take on thrash metal... all atmosphere and shit... along with weirdo songs like 'Mexican Radio' and 'I Won't Dance'. I was rocking 'Into Pandemonium' this morning ad it still stands the test of time....

Ghostface Killah

Oldie but a goldie - Daytona 500 is the best track on the 'Iron Man' Lp. Ghostface has been the most most consistant of the post Wu projects. This is off his 1st LP... waaay back in the day

Can - Mother Sky

I'm surprised we haven't had a Can post before. I have a love/hate relationship with Krautrock. i love the stoner grooves, but get a little lost in the far out experimentalism. I love Can though.... so influential and out theeeerrrrrreeee....

Dr John

Halloween!!Voodoo!!Listening to his Gris Gris album.

Jeffrey Lewis

anti-folk hero's history of New York Punk. so rad. Thanks Mike!!

Rollins/Techno Viking

We fucking love the Techno Viking at B&M. Here's a remix with Rollins. Epic.

Sonic Chicken 4

along with the Clams, Sonic Chicken 4 from France played and totally blew my mind...... so cool and weird. Like the Fallouts meeting fucking Hawkwind and 60's pop....... the drummer is mental and the guitarplayer shared his last drop of bacardi with me. Oh and thee Vicars got paid $300 and Sonic Chicken 4 got $15.... weak

Shannon And The Clams

So, we went to see thee Vicars. They totally had the Seeds/ sonics sound down and they were like 18. They are the 'next big thing' back home. They were fine, but didn't we see this 15/20 years ago done waaaaaay better by the Mighty Caesers, Milkshakes, Cynics and Lyres. They even had a manager. Nice. They were totally blown away by Shannon And The Clams who have this crazy sultry doowop/soul thing going on. Not sure I'm feeling their Oakland hobo hipster following, but they ripped...

D-Clone

Japanese noise merchants D-Clone played here last week. I missed them. They ripped by all accounts..

De Kift

This Dutch band has been going for almost 20 years... run in the same circles as The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans etc.
Mississippi Records has teamed up with Dutch label Red Wig (who recently released the searing Rondos reissue 2XLP) to re-release the band's first album and 7"EP from 1989 here in the US. It's brilliant stuff. The newer stuff is a lot less punk (check out this video...) but that early stuff is noisy, abrasive, and direct. Worth seeking out.

Thee Vicars

UK scallyways. Playing the Elbo Room SF tomorrow. sound like a young Headcoats.

Steven Reich

I was listening to an interview with a pulitzer prize winning music critic Tim Page who has aspergers syndrome (a form of autism). He was talking about how music spoke to him in a way the confusion of people and the world didn't. I sometimes feel like that. He talked about his first written criticism of a piece by Steven Reich where he talked about the enjoyment of the music was not the start and the end....but the journey. I like that. It's pissing with rain in SF and somehow the fluidity of Reich seems perfect for the dull days.....

Richard Thompson

I know our man Rooney has posted up about this man, but I was listening to a radio interview with him and he seems like such a genuine bloke and a real talent. I love early Fairport Convention, but haven't explored too much of his solo work, maybe nows the time...

Tunnel Jam

Nike build ramps in a tunnel in England. Looks rad.

Billy Bragg at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009

Billy Bragg played this year's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park. This was my first time seeing him, and he put on one hell of a show. I found myself going back to some of his recorded material that had put me off. If you're like me, and prefer his recorded stuff without a band accompaniment, then you will find a whole new appreciation for songs like "I Keep Faith" and "Greetings to the New Brunette" when its just Billy and a guitar.

Here are some decent quality live tracks from that performance:

No Power Without Accountability

Sing Their Souls Back Home

Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards

OM

After haning out Pauladelphia last weekend I've had my head stuck into some stoner vibes.... OM are great; medatative and grooving... the new record killlllllllls.

Heavy Metal Jnr.

Acephalix

My friend Dan's band... super metal... super rough. I'm a fan of the 7".... and a big fan of Dan... rocccck.

Girlschool

so the USA had Nashville Pussy and Rev Horton Heat as support fro Motorhead. UK had the Damned and Girlschool. What the Fuck? Love Girlschool... here's 'Please Don't Touch' with Motorhead... stone cold classic.

Motorhead

Saw Motorhead last night. They killed it. here's them on the UK show the Young Ones. I was a nipper when this came on and it blew my head. Classic Lemmy/Philthy/Campbell/Wurzul line up.... siiiiick

Bare Wires

One of my purchases this weekend was an LP by the Bare Wires.... bought solely on the fact that one of the members of Snakeflower 2 is in them. Not disappointed one bit, super catchy powerpop, kinda like the Scientists. These cats are local too... Loving it.

Citizens Arrest

There's a new double LP discography of this New York band's discography just come out. I dug out the LP and 7" and shit still kills. This live video is a little tame, but it's still good to see. Falling somewhere between Void, Ripcord and Siege this band were amazing. No-one has that deep growl to scream thing down like Daryl did!!!
